Technology has always played a role in shaping a more sustainable future—and at Advance Carbon Offsetting, we saw an opportunity to bring precision and accountability to the way vehicle emissions are estimated. Most online carbon calculators rely on generic figures and outdated assumptions, often missing the nuances of how people actually drive. That didn’t sit right with us. So, we built something better: a custom machine learning algorithm that uses real-world driving data to produce emissions estimates with far greater accuracy than anything currently available to the public. By considering factors like engine size, fuel type, city vs. motorway usage, and even how much time is spent in traffic, we offer a data-driven alternative to guesswork.
Our model was trained on over 80 million datapoints of vehicle specifications and emissions figures, and validated to achieve a mean absolute error of just 0.039 tonnes per 1,000 miles—vastly more accurate than most web-based tools. It’s a powerful yet lightweight system designed with scalability and transparency in mind. Whether you're offsetting the footprint of a weekend classic, daily-driver, or fleet of trucks, the algorithm adapts to reflect your actual usage, not an industry average.
